NodX vs NetBox
Different tools for different questions. NetBox = IPAM, cabling, device CMDB (excellent at it). NodX = adaptive anomaly detection & capacity intelligence. The honest answer: most teams run both.

TL;DR
Choose NodX if…
- You need live telemetry ingestion (Redfish, SNMP, MQTT) without building collectors
- You need adaptive anomaly detection (hour-of-day baselines, not static thresholds)
- You need operational capacity math (stranded power, p95 headroom, node-fit)
- You need alert lifecycle (fire → ack → escalate → resolve) with HMAC webhooks
- You want managed operations (SaaS or managed on-prem) — not another Postgres to babysit
Stick with NetBox if…
- You only need IPAM, cabling, device CMDB — no live telemetry
- You have engineering bandwidth to build/maintain collectors, baselines, alerting
- You prefer full self-hosted control and have the ops team for it
- Your scale is small enough that static thresholds + Grafana suffice
- You need plugin extensibility for custom workflows NetBox already supports
Feature Matrix
| Capability | NetBox (OSS / Cloud) | NodX |
|---|---|---|
| Primary question answered | What assets exist and how are they connected? | What is anomalous right now? |
| Data model | CMDB / IPAM / cabling-first | Time-series telemetry-first |
| Deployment model | Self-hosted (Docker/VM), you operate it | SaaS or managed on-prem (Enterprise) |
| Pricing | Free (OSS) + optional NetBox Cloud | Flat per-rack ($5 / $12 / Custom) |
| Support | Community / NetBox Cloud SLA | Business hours (Pro) / 24×7 + TAM (Ent) |
| Capability | NetBox (OSS / Cloud) | NodX |
|---|---|---|
| Redfish / SNMP / MQTT ingest | ❌ Not native (custom scripts) | ✅ Native, first-class |
| Adaptive per-device baselines (24 hourly) | ❌ Threshold-only via plugins | ✅ Z-score, hour-of-day |
| Stranded-power / capacity math | ❌ Rack elevation only | ✅ Built-in: p95, headroom, node-fit |
| Alert lifecycle (fire → ack → escalate → resolve) | ❌ Webhooks only, no lifecycle | ✅ Native, HMAC webhooks, presets |
| Capability | NetBox (OSS / Cloud) | NodX |
|---|---|---|
| Users & sites included | Unlimited (self-hosted) | Unlimited at every tier |
| Data retention | Your Postgres / storage | 30d raw / 1yr hourly / 2yr daily (Pro) |
| Export & webhooks | Webhooks + REST API | Included (Pro+): Slack, Teams, Discord, PD |
| SSO / SCIM / Audit | NetBox Cloud / LDAP plugin | Enterprise (scoped per deal) |
| Capability | NetBox (OSS / Cloud) | NodX |
|---|---|---|
| Asset import from NetBox | N/A (source of truth) | First-class: dry-run, skip/merge/replace |
| Run both simultaneously | N/A | Designed for it: NodX ← NetBox asset sync |
| NodX as intelligence layer on NetBox | N/A | Recommended: NetBox = CMDB/IPAM, NodX = telemetry intelligence |
Total Cost Honesty
| Cost Factor | NetBox (Self-Hosted) | NodX Pro |
|---|---|---|
| License | $0 | $12/rack/mo |
| Hosting (Postgres, Redis, app, backup) | ~$200–800/mo | Included |
| Engineering ops (upgrades, plugins, collectors) | 0.5–1 FTE | Included |
| Redfish/SNMP collector dev | You build/maintain | Included |
| Anomaly detection / capacity math | You build/maintain | Included |
| Alert lifecycle + webhooks | You build/maintain | Included |
| Total at 200 racks | ~$120k–250k/yr (mostly eng time) | $28,800/yr |
Your eng rate may vary. If fully loaded eng cost < $8k/mo, NetBox self-hosted wins on paper. Most mid-market colos don't have that luxury.
Coexistence (The Recommended Stack)
"NetBox = CMDB / IPAM / cabling (source of truth for what exists). NodX = telemetry ingestion, anomaly detection, capacity math, alert lifecycle (source of truth for what is happening)."
NetBox owns
- IPAM: prefixes, VLANs, IP assignments
- Cabling: paths, terminations, patch panels
- Device CMDB: types, roles, platforms, locations
- Virtualization: clusters, VMs, interfaces
- Extensibility: plugins, custom fields, scripts
NodX owns
- Live telemetry: Redfish, SNMP, MQTT, HTTP
- Adaptive baselines: 24 hourly per-device
- Anomaly detection: z-score, threshold, composite
- Alert lifecycle: fire → ack → escalate → resolve
- Capacity math: stranded power, p95, node-fit
- HMAC webhooks: NetBox, ServiceNow, Jira, Slack, PD
Integration pattern: NetBox webhook / scheduled API sync → NodX device/rack/site context. NodX incident.fire → webhook → NetBox custom field / comment / external ticket. Bi-directional, no duplication.
Frequently Asked
NetBox is free. Why pay for NodX?
"Free" excludes: hosting, Postgres ops, backup/restore, upgrades, plugin maintenance, Redfish/SNMP collector development, anomaly detection engineering, alert lifecycle, capacity math, 24×7 support. A 200-rack NetBox deployment typically costs 0.5–1 FTE + infrastructure. NodX Pro at 200 racks = $28,800/yr. If your engineering time is >$2,400/mo, NodX is cheaper.
Can we keep NetBox and add NodX?
Yes — this is the recommended path. NetBox remains your IPAM, cabling, and device CMDB. NodX ingests NetBox devices via API (scheduled sync or webhook), enriches them with live Redfish/SNMP/MQTT telemetry, runs anomaly detection and capacity math, then forwards incidents wherever you need them. NetBox stays the source of truth for "what exists"; NodX becomes the source of truth for "what is happening."
What does migration look like?
NetBox → NodX: REST export (devices, racks, sites, interfaces) → NodX import dry-run (preview conflicts, choose skip/merge/replace) → approve → live. Mandatory dry-run; nothing writes until you confirm. Round-trip export back to NetBox any time via API.
Does NodX do IPAM or cabling?
No. NetBox owns IPAM, prefix management, VLANs, and cable paths. NodX does not replicate those. The integration syncs device/rack/site context from NetBox so NodX anomalies reference the same identifiers.
What about NetBox Cloud?
NetBox Cloud (~$1,200/mo starting) hosts NetBox for you. It still lacks native telemetry ingestion, adaptive anomaly detection, and operational capacity math. You would still need a monitoring layer. NodX + NetBox Cloud is a valid stack: NetBox Cloud = CMDB/IPAM, NodX = intelligence.
